Who We Are

Tree of Rest, Inc. is a 501 C-3  non-profit corporation founded in 1986, in Greensboro, North Carolina, to provide education, training and intervention in the field of sexual abuse, as the result of a high school teacher asking Jan Morrison to speak to her senior high school class on the subject of Jan's sexual abuse.
Because the reaction of the students was so significant, Jan was approached to speak to other classes and then in other schools.  Following the presentations, such a large number of students requested to speak with her about their own sexual abuse experiences, that the need for a program to help students who were struggling with issues resulting from their experiences was evident.
Jan then discontinued her speaking and enlisted high school principals, teachers, counselors, an attorney, a school board member, a pastor, and a therapeutic counselor recognized by the state as an expert in sexual abuse to assist her in putting together a program which would address the needs of the students.  The result was the formation of  the
Tree of Rest, Inc. and the  development of  programs for public high schools and the Christian community.  Over the next 3 years, these programs were presented to schools and communities in North Carolina.

In 1989, Tree of Rest, Inc. moved to Chicago and was reincorporated as an Illinois corporation. In 1990, A Safe Place: Beyond Sexual Abuse was published.
     In 1991,
A Safe Place won the Campus Crusade Book of the Year Award in the category of Teen Issues.  With the award came request from all across the country not only for the existing programs but for specialized presentations and programs for public and community agencies and private psychiatric in-patient providers, foster care providers and group homes as well as for assistance in churches dealing with abuse perpetrated by a staff or volunteer.
Today successful, specialized programs equip churches, schools and the community at large to prevent, as well as to facilitate healing of all those affected by, sexual abuse.

Tree of Rest, Inc. is currently involved in designing an Inner City program for at risk families.
