IMPORTANT NOTICE!
If you have just had sexual abuse disclosed or discovered in your
church, go to our
Emergency Procedures
Page for help on what to do immediately.

Sexual abuse is an issue that
touches church bodies of all sizes and denominations.
Statistics show that 38% of females and 16% of males are sexually
abused before the age of 18 and that 25% of females are raped at
some time in their lives*. When you consider that women who
reported childhood rape were three times more likely to have become
pregnant before age 18 and that 70% to 80% of sexual abuse survivors
report excessive use of drugs and alcohol, it is easy to see that
programs to help
those who have been affected by the sin of sexual abuse are needed
within church bodies. For more statistics concerning sexual abuse
go to Statistics. In addition, a study conducted by
an attorney who specializes in church legal
issues showed
that during a nine year period, about 35,000 lawsuits were filed
against churches alleging sexual deviant behavior by an employee or
volunteer. The average settlement was $1.1 million, with even
higher payments for some churches with congregations of 750 or more
people.
