Sexual Abuse Prevention & Intervention Inventory

Below are a list of questions designed to help church leaders determine whether or not they have taken adequate precautions to fulfill the mandate of love as it is outlined in 1 Corinthians 13. "Love always protects."

We must take our responsibility to protect those God has entrusted to us seriously. All other community based agencies and schools are required by law to implement policies and procedures to ensure a good faith effort has been made to protect the children.  This inventory will assist you in making the determination as to how well equipped your church is to carry out this God given mandate.

Answer the following questions "Yes" or "No":

  1. Do you have policies outlining what constitutes appropriate/ inappropriate behavior of youth and children's workers?
  2. If so, have all youth workers signed and agreed to it prior to having access to any children?
  3. Are children's and youth workers required to attend an orientation/ training prior to having access to children or young people?
  4. Do you know the mandated reporter laws for your state?
  5. Do your workers know the mandated reporter laws?
  6. Have you outlined and educated children's and youth workers how to handle a disclosure of abuse?
  7. Do you have policies in place to protect youth and children's workers from false allegations?
  8. Were safety issues a consideration when your facilities were designed? Is there a visual field into every classroom?

The answer to all eight "Yes or No" questions should be "Yes."

Answer the following questions "True" or "False":

  1. Abuse occurs at a lesser frequency within the church.
  2. Churches should handle disclosures internally.
  3. When a child discloses sexual abuse, the disclosure should be investigated for its legitimacy before action is taken.
  4. The church is legally liable and potentially subject to a lawsuit when abuse occurs and workers were not screened.

The answer to the first three "True or False" questions should be "False."  The answer to the fourth is "True."
